New work - Map of I AM.

During a small bout of restlessness, I got the idea that it may be fun and a great challenge to compete in a few art competitions.  I love the feeling of being pushed to do better and to create something that is true to me on a subject matter that I might otherwise never consider.  I hit up the theartlist.com and found a call for entry with the theme of maps.  The only requirement was that the piece must include some element of maps within it.  The following is my creation and hopefully will be juried into the show.  We shall see.

I am asked a lot about my process and how I create one of my mosaics from start to finish.  Here is a journal in pictures of sorts.  The original drawing was done on a 12x12 art board.  I start with an idea on how to do one small area and do not think about any other part of the picture until I get there.  With so many pieces to the puzzle, it is too overwhelming to think about it as a whole.  I let the picture unfold organically.  The pictures where I remove thought from the process and just let it become what it does, are always the most enjoyable to make and the most pleasing to view.

New works to share.

'The Room'  8x10"

I think this work has been my favorite to work on thus far.  Due to the detailed nature of this picture, I had to take it on in sections - small works within the larger work - or I became easily overwhelmed.  Likewise, I found myself needing to take breaks from working on the wallpaper because it was so extremely time consuming.  My brain would literally  tire out at times and I would just have to set it aside and work on something else of a more simple design.  Near the end, I had a quilling tool break and become unusable and misplaced my back-up, so I stepped back in time and completed the work using finger rolling.  I love the result.  There are sections with almost non-existent centers and then others with larger open coils.  The picture itself is only 8 x 10" but took a whopping 85 hours to complete.  Every inch was time consuming, challenging, and extremely pleasurable.  I am enjoying the more detailed pictures and will continue to push myself in this direction.  I am already plotting my next picture and hope to get rolling soon.

This little butterfly was created for the digital design only.  I isolated it using my computer and then printed out dozens of copies on temporary tattoo paper.  My daughter and I cut them up and applied them to all the little kids who visited my booth at the last Waikiki Art Fest.  I made robots for the boys.  It was a hit.

This untitled work was a commissioned piece.  It measures in at 5x7" and resides now in Alaska.

'Lady Longboards'  16x20"

I began this piece in October, right after I arrived in Oahu.  It has taken me a long time to complete.  It's size is large, but I have found that my interest is taking me in a new direction of more detailed work and I found the shading aspect of this work daunting.  I love the effect, but I need to do it in stages.  I remember the same feeling when I used to spend my free time knitting.  Whenever it was time to stockinette stick, my eyes would glaze over and I would begin dreaming of new projects to tackle.  This was much the same.  I have completed a good 20 pictures since the beginning of this one.  I would bring my boarders out each festival weekend and chip away at a new area.  Finally the end was reached and I am really happy with the end result.  I love how  it begins in grey scale and enhances in color.

Lots -o- quilled necklaces up!

I am slowly working my way to getting a lot of my paper jewelry up on my new website instead of Etsy, etc.  I have so many ideas and plans for the site that there just does not seem to be enough hours in the day to make and get everything done.  Not to mention the copious hours needed to spend on my favorite thing... quilling.  I managed to get a few up however and you should absolutely go check them out.

2 more mini works.

Here is a share of two more small works that I created for a swap on Craftster.com  Now that I have the site to create small projects for, I might not have the time to do ATCs as much, but they sure are fun to make.

Quilled Retro Telly Fish Tank

I have had this design in my head for the longest time, but finally got around to making it tonight.  I love how it turned out.  I am going to make up a couple more versions this week and post a tutorial on littlecircles.net really soon for those interested in trying it out for themselves.  I think I will finish it off as I do all my jewelry and turn it into a necklace.  It will be a total fun wear.

Lotus Flower

Just finished up my lotus flower.  It is pretty huge.  I am not sure I will be able to pull off wearing it - we'll see.  I am gearing up for some exciting (and free) new project tutorials for the members on my website.  I will be posting pics soon!

Big News!

Big, big news in the world of little circles...  We've got a website!  Not a personal website, but a social one where quillers can meet, get inspired, exchange and learn.  There are galleries, tutorials, and soon a shop that will be filled with more than 100 shades of quilling paper and the latest tools.  We may have a few surprises up our sleeve as well ;) I am so excited for this new endeavor and I hope that other paper rolling enthusiasts will like it as well.  If you are one of them, why not check it out?  There will be many additions coming in the next few months, but the site is worth a good look around.  Let me know what you think!

Just noticed that my work 'Inhale' was featured on DeviantArt - which has awarded me with over 1200 comments on my various pictures.  Amazingness.

Intention Necklace.

believe in the power of intention - as in, what you think about, comes about. Set an intention and then see it come into fruition. That mindset is what inspired this Intention Pendant that I designed last night for myself. It will soon be made into a necklace, but I wanted to share it with you first. It measures in at 2.5 x 2.75 inches and was created in many hues of violets and green - thus setting my intention for spirituality, abundance and health.

I will be making up a few more color varieties (thus different intentions) over the next few days as well as additional designs with intention as the intention (punny!) and may even add them to my Etsy shop... we shall see.  I am working on my soul series of paper mosaics and find this realm of paper jewelry making a nice retreat and compliment to the work.  I hope you like them as much as I do.

It's Springtime in Paper Earring Land!

Although I live in Hawaii and the weather here is pretty much always amazing, sunny and warm... I swear I can feel spring nipping at the toes of all of my favorite peeps in the North.  As with all seasonal change, something in my body goes *SWITCH* and I need to create new beautiful things in it's honor and in new and fabulous colors to boot.  The itch hit me this week and ever since, my little fingers have been busily working on new designs for the warmer days ahead.  There is absolutely more to come, but here is a peek at what I've been doing :)
